The Institute for Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is coordinating a FP7 project HELICoiD (HypErspectraL Imaging Cancer Detection ICT‐618080), funded by the European Commission. The objective of this project is the detection of different types of cancers (mainly brain cancer) using hyperspectral cameras. The main goal is to provide surgeons with real time information about the probability of cancer for the tissues currently exposed. The consortium is composed of 9 partners (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Hospital Doctor Negrín ‐ Fundación Canaria de Investigación y Salud, Medtronic, Imperial College London, Oncovision (GEM‐Imaging), Virtual Angle BV, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Association pour la Recherche et le Développement des Méthodes et Processus Industriels, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust).

The Ministry of Education and Science has published the Resolution of the General Secretariat of Universities to grant the Mention towards Excellence to the IUMA Doctoral Program. The Mention towards Excellence aims to recognize the scientific, technical and training solvency of PhD programs in Spanish universities. Doctoral programs that obtain a Mention towards Excellence will become part of a group of programs that will be made public and will be an international landmark for its performance and results.
In agreement with the announcement, the period of validity of the Mention will be for the academic years 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014, and its validity will cease in the case that program is no longer being offered during the period of validity or for other causes that could lead to a follow-up report that may result in the extinction of the Mention towards Excellence.
The list of programs that have been honored with this Mention will be added to the Integrated University Information System-SIIU, in which any updated information related to such mentions will be recorded.
The first Research Institute at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Institute for Applied Microelectronics (IUMA), integrated in the Science and Technology Park, is now a landmark in microchip design nationally and internationally, where the integrated software and applications developed play an increasing role in the market. Structured into seven divisions, its scientific activity covers a wide spectrum in the field of ICT with its creations ranging from sensor networks, wireless applications, services for tourism, to security systems and advanced applications in healthcare.
